PAPAYA

ABOUT

The papaya is a pear-shaped fruit with a smooth, thin skin. A ripe papaya has salmon-pink to yellowy-orange flesh and has a mild and sweet flavour. The hollow space in the centre of the papaya is filled with black seeds. These are not eaten. Unripe papayas are sometimes also eaten as vegetables. TFC ripens papayas, ensuring they can be consumed immediately after purchase.

PREPARATION

A papaya is ripe when the fruit has green-yellow-red mottled skin and gives a little when lightly pressed. Ripe papayas can be stored in a cool place for a few days. It’s best not to store the fruits in the fridge. Unripe fruits are best ripened at room temperature. Cut the fruit through the centre and scoop out the black seeds. This will allow you to cut or scoop out the flesh. Papayas are often used in fruit salads.
