PEPINO

ABOUT

The pepino is a round or oval fruit. The skin is thin and yellow-green in colour with red-brown stripes or spots. The light yellow flesh is juicy and mild. It has a sweet flavour and tastes a little like a pear or melon. The flat seeds in the centre are edible.

PREPARATION

A pepino is ripe when it feels soft to the touch. Unripe fruits are best ripened at room temperature. Ripe fruits are best stored in the fridge. The pepino can be eaten by cutting the fruit through the centre and scooping it out. The pepino can also be peeled and cut into slices. The skin is not edible. The pepino is often eaten with fish and meat dishes in South Africa.
