ABOUT

The shallot is a small oval onion with bronze coloured skin. The vegetable has a more refined taste than the ordinary onion. Shallots are ideal for adding extra flavour to dishes and to provide salads and sauces with a little extra seasoning. The shallot can be eaten raw, but it can also be baked, stewed, boiled or braised.

PREPARATION

The shallot must feel firm to the touch when purchased and have a dry outer skin. Remove the skin before use, as well as a small section from both the top and bottom. The shallot can subsequently be cut into rings or shavings. The shallot can be stored in a cool, dry and dark place for long periods of time.
