TAMARILLO

ABOUT

The tamarillo is also known as the tomato tree. The fruit is egg shaped. The thin shiny skin is tomato red or purple red. The flesh is juicy and red/yellow in colour. It contains small flat, black/brown seeds which are edible. It tastes a little sour. The skin is edible, but tastes quite bitter.

PREPARATION

The tamarillo is ripe when it feels soft to the touch. Unripe fruits are best left to ripen at room temperature. Consume the fruit by cutting this through the centre and scooping the flesh out. Sprinkle a little sugar on top for a somewhat sweeter taste. The skin is easy to remove by ‘shocking’ the fruit: first dunk it in hot water and subsequently in cold water. This will allow you to remove the skin very easily. The tamarillo is also used for fruit salads, chutneys, stews and desserts.
